PriortothePeoplesRepublic,however,FathersDaywascelebratedonAugust8whentheRepublicofChinagovernedfromBeijing.ThisisdeterminedbythefactthattheEighth(ba)dayoftheEighth(ba)monthmakestwo“eights”(八八,ba-ba),whichsoundssimilartothecolloquialwordfordaddy(ba-ba，爸爸).ItisstillcelebratedonthisdateinareasstillunderthecontroloftheRepublicofChinaincludingTaiwan.
父亲节，顾名思义是感恩父亲的节日。约始于二十世纪初，起源于美国，现已广泛流传于世界各地，节日日期因地域而存在差异。大多数国家都把父亲节定在每年6月的第三个星期日庆祝。节日里有各种的庆祝方式，大部分都与赠送礼物、家族聚餐或活动有关。
中国大陆官方没有设立正式的父亲节，但是中华人民共和国成立以前（及民国时期），我国也有自己的父亲节，定于每年的8月8日。这是因为“八八”和“爸爸”发音相近，而且“八八”两字连缀起来，又像一个“父”子。现在我国的台湾地区还在8月8日庆祝父亲节。
